The irreversible error
Harry was born into a well educated and enlightened family of Professor and Dr (Mrs.) Olaoluwa. Being the first and the only child of his parents, he was taken care of in terms of education; therefore he was able finish his first degree at the age of 20 with a first class honour in Architecture.
Because of his cheerful, handsome and generous nature, girls were all over him like honey to ants. Harry enjoyed their company, he even have more female friends than male friend.
He does not know to refuse their numerous advances and he made use of it to the fullest. But his parents did not care to know of any of his escapades with all this girls that were flocking to him. They spoilt him to the extent that he has started riding his own personal car at the age of 17.
Harry! His mama called him "when will you introduce your wife among all this girls that were doting over you?” but Harry's excuse was that he is too young to marry, and most of his male friends are still single, so therefore marriage is still far from his plans at the moment.
Sometimes during the weekend he will join his Daddy on the trip to their quite village, for a nice time in their palatial mansion. Servants were there to run any necessary errands; therefore, any trip to their village is always a moment to remember.
It was on one this trip that Harry decided to stay behind. He wanted to be closer home than any his friends. Village life from my own perspective is still the best, because it is there you are able to breath in the undiluted and unpolluted air associated with urban areas, any thing food you eat is farm fresh. No wonder our wealthy men are always in the habit of relocating to the village after their retirement.
This is one of the reasons why Harry wanted to stay behind, because he is matured enough to feel the allure of a village life and his father granted his request but he gave him only two days to return back to Lagos.
The first day, he relaxed in their expansive balcony from morning till evening with his friends to enjoy cool breeze and palm wine which he normally has regular supplies from Pa. Johnson his father's supplier living in the same village. When Pa. Johnson cannot deliver by himself he will send his beautiful daughter Kemi to do the delivery for him and the drinks does not go without assorted meat from the same Pa Johnson's grass cutter farm.
The last day Harry was to spend in the village, was the time he started noticing some attractive features in the Kemi the daughter of PA Johnson. Kemi was to deliver the palm wine that very day because her father was a bit tired and had asked Kemi to deliver the drinks on his behalf. But her beauty does not escape the experienced and flirtatious eyes of Harry.
That was how Harry went for the kill, He promised to marry her and further her education, if only she could be his girlfriend. But kemi’s disciplined and shy nature, made her to consult her friends about Harry, the reply they gave her was that, She should not allow the opportunity to slip by and she should succumb to all Harry's flirtatious advances. Kemi accepted him and Harry ended spending extra two days in the village with the excuse that he wanted to take care of one of his sick friends.
The relationship between Harry and Kemi Started in earnest with Harry playing the perfect husband, all this were happening without the knowledge of their parents. Harry who is now a matured man always find one opportunity or the other to be in the village, but Professor and Dr. Mrs. Olaoluwa believes that Harry is just being childish.
Harry's last visit to the village one Saturday evening without the knowledge of his parents, made his father to start a private investigation into Harry's frequent visit, because they don’t want anything bad to happen to him since he is their only son. Professor Olaoluwa decided to trace Harry to the Village. It was that day he received the shock of his life.
As professor was about to enter the house around 6.00pm, he overheard an argument between Harry and a girl inside the sitting room, and the argument was about a pregnancy, but he did not know who Harry was discussing with.
He was eavesdropping on their discussion, and the argument was on whether to terminate the pregnancy or to retain it. Harry wanted the pregnancy terminated but Kemi does not want to die as a result of abortion.
The argument was becoming too hot and there is a likelihood of violence, Professor decided to safe the day. He opened the door and Harry was shocked to see his father around, he immediately regained his composure because he had determined to make sure that the pregnancy will not come to the notice of his parents.
Prof as he is popularly called among his friends was very shock to see Kemi the daughter of his palm wine supplier in his living room. He did not expect Harry to descend so low, to the extent off impregnating a girl of a very low intelligent and above all, from a poor background. He openly objected to the pregnancy because he believes that it is either Kemi wanted to force her self on Harry or she must have lied against Harry.
Then, Proff. asked Harry, whether he his actually the owner of the pregnancy? but Harry blatantly denied having slept with the girl. Kemi was harassed, disgraced and insulted out of the premises, they accused her of being a gold digger and all they called her all kind of unprintable names. Kemi went her back to her parents with a troubled heart, but was afraid to inform them of her latest condition.
The following day Professor Olaoluwa went to Pa Johnson's house, which is not very far from his own house, Pa Johnson was even apologizing that he has not been able to supply he regular palm wine, but Prof told him that he has come for another serious issue that need to resolved urgently.
The case of Kemi and Harry was tabled down and Professor Olaoluwa was on the defensive side of his only son and Pa. Johnson believes that her own daughter has a very good upbringing and that she cannot lie against Harry. And Pa. Johnson made it clear that, he did not know of any relationship between his daughter and Harry.
But Prof. wanted to make it clear that, even if their is a prove that, it is Harry that impregnated the girl, the own alternative is just to take the child but there should be no string attached. Pa. Johnson sensed the danger in that statement and he made it clear to Proff. that even though he is not as influential as him he made it clear that "the gods will surely yield to the voice of an oppressed chameleon".
Pa Johnson belong to one of the most powerful cult in the village and this cult believed in equal justice for their members anywhere in the world, the members are scattered all over the village they are the silent protector, they believe in the use of charms and other mysteries that to achieve their aims even the kings of the other neighboring village must pay obeisance to them before he is corronated.
Therefore, Pa Johnson tabled his case among his fellow cult members. A summon was issue to Professor and Dr (Mrs.) Olaoluwa, but his wife refused out rightly "how can we listen to what this poor bastards are saying? they are just looking for an easy way to make money by framing her only child for the pregnancy" she did not allow her husband to go for the meeting.
Proff. friend warned him of the danger that can befall his only son if he chooses not to answer the summon, but his wife, now is the only obstacle for the issue to be resolved amicably. Because of the respect the elders of the Village have for Proff. and coupled with fact he is the first professor to come out of that village , therefore, he is enjoy a kind of recognition that is only befitting of noble man.
The honourable traditional leader of the village in the company of Pa. Johnson with some of other high ranking chiefs came to a visit to the Professor Olaoluwa in Lagos. The wife as usual is the problem, she proves so difficult that she is ready to make sure that every efforts to make them realize that, things are not always the way it seems to be, poor man today might be a rich man tomorrow.
She became so adamant that the chiefs warned her husband that the gods of the land will be invoked, whatever consequences befall his son as a result of the invocation should not be seen as human made, they should not bother to find solutions, as there can never be remedy to who ever gods has caused because it is a god that make and break remedies.
Professor Olaoluwa had seen the hand writing on the wall because he grown up in the village, therefore he cannot claim ignorance of the consequences of the traditional rulers’ utterances; he knows everything because his great grandfather belongs to one of them. He decided to yield to the voice of reason.
Kemi and Harry were united in a purely traditional way without fanfare associated with people of their caliber, because to them, it is a case to be kept secret and to Pa Johnson it is a victory well deserved, her dead wife will now rest in peace because Kemi is the only child born in their old age and he is ready to make sure nothing evil happens to her anywhere she goes.
A flat was allocated for them among Prof’s numerous building in Lagos. At the initial stage, Harry was initially embarrassed to introduce her pregnant wife to his friends because of the fear of rejection but, they rather encourage him to send Kemi to school.
After four month of her marriage to Harry, Kemi delivered a beautiful set of twins, and they the Harry’s carbon copy and this feat alone made the senior Olaoluwa’s to change their attitude towards her and Harry’s extremely happy to be the father of a beautiful set of twins that look exactly like him.
Kemi had so far been integrated fully into the household of the Olaoluwa’s.
Finally Pa JOhnson had thought her daughter a lesson in perseverance and hard working as an instrument for survival in any environment. All this attributes Kemi brought to play in Olaoluwa’s house hold.
