Alice and Mensah were two young loving couples, stranded in Nigeria because they cannot pay there way back home to Ghana when they were asked to return back during the military government of General Buhari.
Alice hawk cooked food by daytime and Mensah too managed as a primary school teacher within the vicinity to keep body and soul together, since they have not gotten any kids, they were able to manage with the meagre amount coming from there work, but the money is too small that they cannot even pay there house rent. And Mensah decided to look for another work that pays more that the teaching job. He was able secure a job as a petrol station attendant which pay well than his former teaching job.
Live continues in earnest, Alice was able to contribute her own quota to make sure that the relationship survives the traumas associated with poverty and which can put an end to any relationship.
Mensah is so hardworking that he collected the most valuable workers award in the service station and this attracted the attention of the service station owner, who himself is a very busy, wealthy, retired chief judge and the traditional head of his village Okinka(not the real name).
Mensah's boss developed so much interest in him that he started showering him with gifts he even gave him regular access to one his cars. But rumours had it that this man belong to a powerful traditional elites cults that specialize in exchange of human as a gifts during a particular period of the year and it is during this period he normally paid a visit to an old time friend and a fellow traditional ruler in a remote village called Okute.
But Mensah did not take the rumour very seriously because of the chief's interest in his family; the chief had even promised him that Mensah's pregnant wife will be put to bed in one of the best hospitals in city.
It was on one cool Friday that the chief decided to sent Mensah on an errand to Okute town, he has been given the directives on how to get there without any stress and he had also been advised by the chief not to take the car along because of the bad nature of Okute road.
But, the period he is to travel falls within the period when non indigenes or strangers are not allowed to enter Okute village, but with the full knowledge of Mensah's boss.
Mensah arrived at the village by night around 8.00pm, the whole town looks sleepy with very few people moving around but he was paying little or no attention to them, the only thing on his mind was how to deliver his boss messages to the king and return back to the City the following day.
But still, thinking of how to get to the palace and the how to rest his tired body, a Mercedes Benz car just dimmed its head lamp to his face and the vehicle stopped a few meters from him, thinking of how somebody can recognize in him in this remote and sleepy village.
He walked toward the vehicle, on bending down, to see the driver of the car, the driver later turned out to be one of the brother to his student back in his teaching days.
They exchange pleasantries and he asked Mensah to enter that he has a very serious discussion with him, but Mensah was so engrossed in the message to be delivered to that king, he refused to enter. But the driver told him that at this particular period of the year he must not be seen working freely because he is not an indigene of Okute town.
He jumped inside the car and asked the driver to take him to the nearest hotel, the driver took him to a hotel in the next town, and he narrated the whole story to him.
There are elite cults in which (Mensah’s boss is a member) that specialize in eating of human flesh and they use the other body parts for ritual to prolong the life of their members.
The venue every year is the palace of Okute king. The particular period of the year is just a charade to deceive the people unsuspecting of Okute. Each member of the cult send in a visitor to the palace and they are made to pass through a particular entrance laden with charms, the moment the visitor passes through the entrance he lost consciousness, except by God's intervention he cannot come out of that place alive. The members always arrive a day after the meals has been prepared.
Mensah did not even wait to hear the end of the story; he took the next available bus back to the city. On getting back to the city he went straight home but did not meet his wife, his boss had already declared him missing, while a search party has been organized to look for him. When the pregnancy wife came back he met her husband hiding in one wardrobe that he doesn’t want his boss to know that he was around. But the wife told him that his boss has travelled to Okute. Mensah narrated the whole story to his wife.
When the Boss came back Mensah resigned his job with the service station and refused to take anything from the Chief. The Chief died the following year due to a very terrible sickness and rumours has it that it as a result of not being able to meet his obligation to the cult members.
Finally, there is a reason for every amorous attention being given especially if the attention is coming from somebody from a very rich man like Mensah's boss. What relationship has a Fox and a Bird or relation between a rat and a mouse?
